Υπάρχουν μουσικοί που ανακαλύπτουν τα blues μέσα από τη δισκοθήκη τους, άλλοι μέσα από τις μουσικές τους επιρροές και κάποιοι που τα συναντούν μέσα από την ίδια τη ζωή. Στην περίπτωση του Βρετανού τραγουδοποιού Ben Hemming, φαίνεται πως συνέβη το τελευταίο.
Η δική του μουσική διαδρομή ξεκίνησε σε μια δύσκολη περίοδο της ζωής του. Αφήνοντας πίσω μια καθημερινότητα που δεν τον ικανοποιούσε, αποφάσισε να αναζητήσει μια διαφορετική πορεία, ξεκινώντας ένα μουσικό ταξίδι στην Αμερική.
Με μια παλιά κιθάρα που αγόρασε από ένα ενεχυροδανειστήριο, ταξίδεψε στις νότιες πολιτείες, ακολουθώντας τα βήματα των παλιών Delta bluesmen. Δεν ήταν απλώς ένα ταξίδι αναζήτησης μουσικών εμπειριών, αλλά και μια προσπάθεια να κατανοήσει την παράδοση και την αυθεντικότητα που κρύβεται πίσω από αυτή τη μουσική.
Μια ιδιαίτερη στιγμή στο Nashville έμελλε να αποτελέσει καθοριστική εμπειρία. Εκεί παρατήρησε έναν ηλικιωμένο μουσικό να παίζει μια αυτοσχέδια μονόχορδη κιθάρα, κατασκευασμένη από ένα ξύλο και ένα κουτί, συνοδεύοντας τον εαυτό του με ρυθμούς που έπαιζε με τα πόδια του. Η απλότητα των μέσων, σε συνδυασμό με την αμεσότητα και την ειλικρίνεια της ερμηνείας, του αποκάλυψαν κάτι ουσιαστικό: τα blues δεν βρίσκονται μόνο στον προορισμό, αλλά κυρίως στο ταξίδι και στην ακατέργαστη έκφραση των συναισθημάτων.
Επιστρέφοντας στο Λονδίνο, έφερε μαζί του τραγούδια που είχε γράψει κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιπλάνησης. Αποτέλεσαν τη βάση για το πρώτο του άλμπουμ, *Broken Man*, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε ανεξάρτητα και απέσπασε θετικές κριτικές. Ακολούθησαν τα *City of Streets*, *Marked Man* και *Darkness Before Dawn*, καθώς και δύο ευρωπαϊκές περιοδείες. Στην πορεία του, ο Hemming διαμόρφωσε ένα προσωπικό μουσικό ύφος, αντλώντας στοιχεία από τα blues, τη roots μουσική και το alternative rock.

Dark Days – Ένα σκοτεινό μουσικό ταξίδι
Με το *Dark Days*, ο Ben Hemming παρουσιάζει μια συλλογή πέντε τραγουδιών που κινείται ανάμεσα στα blues, την Americana και το alternative rock. Τα τραγούδια
1. The Path
Το *The Path* ανοίγει τη θεματική του EP με την αναζήτηση της πίστης και της προσωπικής αλήθειας. Ο αφηγητής αισθάνεται μόνος, προσπαθεί να βρει τον δρόμο της επιστροφής και αμφισβητεί όσα κάποτε θεωρούσε δεδομένα. Παράλληλα, ασκεί κριτική στη λατρεία του χρήματος και της εξουσίας, παρουσιάζοντάς τα ως ψεύτικους θεούς. Το επαναλαμβανόμενο ερώτημα για το αν κάποιος έχει πραγματικά βρει τον δρόμο του αφήνει να εννοηθεί πως η αναζήτηση δεν τελειώνει ποτέ.
2. Dark Days
Το ομότιτλο τραγούδι κινείται σε ένα έντονα σκοτεινό περιβάλλον, με βιβλικές και γοτθικές εικόνες. Η απώλεια της ψυχής, η παρουσία του διαβόλου, η αμαρτία και η πτώση συνθέτουν μια εικόνα εσωτερικής σύγκρουσης. Ωστόσο, μέσα σε αυτή τη σκοτεινή διαδρομή υπάρχει και μια διέξοδος. Η επαναλαμβανόμενη φράση «I found another way, inside» μεταφέρει την ιδέα ότι η απάντηση μπορεί να βρίσκεται μέσα στον ίδιο τον άνθρωπο, ακόμη και όταν όλα γύρω του μοιάζουν χαμένα.
3. Another Life
Το *Another Life* στρέφεται σε μια πιο στοχαστική και μελαγχολική κατεύθυνση. Ο αφηγητής αναρωτιέται για τις διαδρομές που ακολούθησε, για εκείνες που δεν επέλεξε και για τη δυνατότητα μιας διαφορετικής ζωής. Ο χρόνος, η μνήμη και η επιθυμία για μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία βρίσκονται στο επίκεντρο. Είναι ένα τραγούδι που αφήνει χώρο στον ακροατή να αναγνωρίσει τις δικές του σκέψεις για όσα πέρασαν και όσα ίσως θα μπορούσαν να είχαν συμβεί.
4. Failures of a Fool
Ένα από τα πιο προσωπικά τραγούδια της συλλογής. Εδώ ο Hemming στρέφεται στα λάθη, στη μοναξιά, στην ηλικία και στην ανθρώπινη αδυναμία. Ο αφηγητής αναγνωρίζει τις αποτυχίες του, χωρίς να προσπαθεί να απαλλάξει τον εαυτό του από τις ευθύνες. Η επιθυμία για μετάνοια συνυπάρχει με την πικρία απέναντι στη ζωή. Κι όμως, μέσα από αυτή την αυτοκριτική αναδύεται μια σημαντική διαπίστωση: το σώμα μεγαλώνει, η νεότητα περνά, αλλά η ψυχή μπορεί να εξακολουθεί να αισθάνεται νέα.
5. The Musings of My Mind
Το τελευταίο κομμάτι στρέφεται προς τον εσωτερικό κόσμο, τη σκέψη, τη μνήμη και την αμφιβολία. Σύμφωνα με την περιγραφή του δημιουργού, εξερευνά τη λεπτή γραμμή ανάμεσα στην πραγματικότητα, την αυταπάτη και τις διαφορετικές εκδοχές του εαυτού μας. Μουσικά, όπως γίνεται αντιληπτό από την ακρόαση, εμφανίζονται πιο έντονα folk αποχρώσεις, προσφέροντας μια διαφορετική διάσταση στο κλείσιμο του EP.
Η άποψή μας – Ανάμεσα στο σκοτεινό alternative rock, τις μπαλάντες και τη folk
Ακούγοντας το Dark Days, γίνεται σαφές ότι ο Ben Hemming δεν επιδιώκει να κινηθεί αποκλειστικά μέσα στα όρια του blues. Παρότι οι blues καταβολές αποτελούν ένα από τα σημεία αναφοράς του, η μουσική του αναπτύσσεται σε ένα ευρύτερο ηχητικό περιβάλλον. Τα πρώτα τραγούδια δημιουργούν μια σκοτεινή και εσωστρεφή ατμόσφαιρα, με στοιχεία που παραπέμπουν στο dark alternative rock. Σε ορισμένες στιγμές, η διάθεση αυτή θυμίζει την αισθητική των Nine Inch Nails, κυρίως ως προς τη σκοτεινή κατεύθυνση και το συναισθηματικό βάρος. Καθώς προχωρά η ακρόαση, η μουσική αποκτά περισσότερο μελωδικό χαρακτήρα και πλησιάζει στη φόρμα της rock μπαλάντας. Το EP περιλαμβάνει διαφορετικές μουσικές αποχρώσεις, χωρίς να εγκλωβίζεται σε μια ενιαία φόρμα ή σε μια αυστηρή κατηγοριοποίηση.Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει το τελευταίο κομμάτι, The Musings of My Mind, όπου γίνονται πιο αισθητές οι folk αναφορές, προσθέτοντας μια διαφορετική ατμόσφαιρα στο συνολικό αποτέλεσμα.
Εξίσου ενδιαφέρουσα είναι και η στιχουργική προσέγγιση. Πίσω από τη σκοτεινή μουσική ατμόσφαιρα βρίσκεται ένας κόσμος γεμάτος υπαρξιακά ερωτήματα. Η απώλεια της πίστης, η ενοχή, η μετάνοια, η ανθρώπινη αδυναμία και η αναζήτηση ενός διαφορετικού δρόμου αποτελούν τον κοινό θεματικό άξονα των τραγουδιών. Δεν πρόκειται απλώς για σκοτεινές ιστορίες, αλλά για προσωπικές εξομολογήσεις γύρω από την ανθρώπινη εμπειρία.Αυτό που έχει ενδιαφέρον στην περίπτωση του Ben Hemming είναι ότι δεν αντιμετωπίζει το blues ως ένα αυστηρό πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο πρέπει να κινηθεί. Το χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο ως μία από τις μουσικές του αφετηρίες, επιτρέποντας στις υπόλοιπες επιρροές να διαμορφώσουν τη δική του ταυτότητα.Το Dark Days είναι μια δουλειά με σκοτεινή διάθεση, μελωδικές αναζητήσεις και αρκετές μουσικές αναφορές. Γιατί, τελικά, το ζητούμενο δεν είναι αν ένας μουσικός παίζει blues, rock ή folk. Είναι το κατά πόσο καταφέρνει να μεταφέρει τις επιρροές του μέσα από τη δική του προσωπική έκφραση.
Το Dark Days είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα στάση στη μουσική διαδρομή του Ben Hemming, ενός δημιουργού που συνεχίζει να αναζητά τη δική του θέση ανάμεσα στις blues ρίζες και στις σύγχρονες rock επιρροές.

The Road to the Blues
Some musicians discover the blues through their record collections, others through their musical influences, while some encounter it through life itself. In the case of British singer-songwriter Ben Hemming, it seems the latter was true.
His musical journey began during a particularly difficult period in his life. Looking for a way out of an unsatisfying routine, he decided to take a different direction, embarking on a musical journey across America.
Armed with an old guitar bought from a pawn shop, he travelled through the southern states, following in the footsteps of the Delta bluesmen who came before him. It was more than a journey in search of musical experiences; it was also an attempt to understand the tradition and authenticity behind the music.
One particular moment in Nashville would prove especially influential. There, he came across an elderly musician playing a homemade one-string guitar, constructed from a piece of wood and a box, accompanying himself with rhythms played by his feet. The simplicity of the instrument, combined with the honesty and immediacy of the performance, revealed something essential to Hemming: the blues are not simply about the destination, but about the journey itself and the rawness of its expression.
Returning to London, he brought with him a collection of songs written along the way. These became the foundation of his debut album, *Broken Man*, an independent release that received positive critical attention.
Further releases followed, including *City of Streets*, *Marked Man* and *Darkness Before Dawn*, alongside two European tours. Over time, Hemming developed a personal musical identity, drawing from blues, roots music and alternative rock.
His work has attracted attention from music publications. *The Blues Magazine* described him as “a unique musical entity”, *Blues Blast Magazine* referred to his songs as “songs of bleak beauty”, while *Americana UK* declared: “This is a new blues.”
Dark Days – A Dark Musical Journey
With *Dark Days*, Ben Hemming presents a five-track collection that moves between blues, Americana and alternative rock. It is an introspective release in which music and lyrics meet around themes of lost faith, guilt, repentance, personal failure and the search for meaning.
The lyrics create a dark world filled with religious and biblical references, symbolism and existential questions. The individual is confronted with personal choices, weaknesses and their consequences, searching for another way through inner conflict.
Musically, the EP does not remain confined to a single formula. Its blues and Americana foundations coexist with elements of classic alternative rock, while different melodic and atmospheric approaches give the songs their own identities.
The Tracks
1. The Path
*The Path* introduces the EP's themes through the search for faith and personal truth. The narrator feels alone, attempts to find his way home and questions things he once took for granted.
There is also a clear criticism of the pursuit of money and power, presented as false gods. The recurring question of whether anyone has truly found the way suggests that the search may never really end.
2. Dark Days
The title track moves through an intensely dark landscape of biblical and gothic imagery. The loss of the soul, the presence of the devil, sin and downfall create a picture of inner conflict.
Yet within this darkness, there is also a possible way forward. The recurring line “I found another way, inside” suggests that the answer may lie within the individual, even when everything else seems lost.
3. Another Life
*Another Life* takes a more reflective and melancholic direction. The narrator considers the paths taken, the ones never chosen and the possibility of a different life.
Time, memory and the desire for another chance are at the centre of the song. It leaves room for listeners to recognise their own thoughts about what has passed and what might have been.
4. Failures of a Fool
One of the most personal songs in the collection. Here, Hemming turns towards mistakes, loneliness, age and human weakness. The narrator acknowledges his failures without attempting to escape responsibility.
The desire for repentance exists alongside a sense of bitterness towards life. Yet out of this self-reflection emerges an important realisation: the body grows older and youth passes, but the soul can still feel young.
5. The Musings of My Mind
The closing track turns inward, exploring thought, memory and doubt. According to the artist's description, it examines the fine line between reality, self-deception and the different versions of ourselves.
Musically, as heard in the listening experience, more pronounced folk colours emerge, bringing a different dimension to the closing chapter of the EP.
Our Review – Between Dark Alternative Rock, Ballads and Folk
Listening to *Dark Days*, it becomes clear that Ben Hemming is not trying to confine himself to the boundaries of the blues. Although his blues roots remain an important point of reference, his music develops within a much broader sonic landscape.
The opening tracks establish a dark and introspective atmosphere, with elements that point towards dark alternative rock. At certain moments, the mood recalls the aesthetic of Nine Inch Nails, particularly in its darker direction and emotional intensity.
As the listening experience progresses, the music takes on a more melodic character, moving closer to the form of the rock ballad. The EP contains a variety of musical shades without becoming trapped in a single formula or strict genre classification.
The closing track, *The Musings of My Mind*, is particularly interesting, with its more noticeable folk references adding a different atmosphere to the overall picture.
The lyrical approach is equally compelling. Behind the dark musical atmosphere lies a world filled with existential questions. Lost faith, guilt, repentance, human weakness and the search for another way form the common thematic thread running through the songs. These are not simply dark stories, but personal reflections on the human experience.
What makes Ben Hemming's approach interesting is that he does not treat the blues as a strict framework within which he must operate. Rather, he uses it as one of his musical starting points, allowing his other influences to help shape his own identity.
*Dark Days* is a release characterised by a dark mood, melodic exploration and a variety of musical references. There is no need to force it into a single category. Its appeal lies precisely in the way Hemming brings different musical worlds together to create something personal.
Ultimately, the question is not whether a musician plays blues, rock or folk. What matters is whether they can transform their influences into an expression of their own.
Dark Days is an interesting chapter in Ben Hemming's musical journey, marking the continuing search of an artist finding his own place between blues roots and contemporary rock influences.

It was whilst stumbling along the main drag in Nashville one night, somewhat worse for wear, that his moment of epiphany came; he observed a crowd surrounding an old man playing an extraordinarily battered one string guitar, made from nothing more than a broom handle and a box, whilst playing drums with his feet. The rudimentary equipment belied a performance of musical integrity which touched Ben in a way he had never previously been, and in that moment he sensed he had found the inspiration he was looking for; the blues came not from the destination, but from the journey, and from the rawness of its expression. He eventually returned to London with a collection of songs he’d written along the road, which went on to form the basis of his debut album, the aptly titled ‘Broken Man’. Recorded with nothing more than the equipment he had to hand, he self-released the album to critical acclaim; The Blues Magazine called him 'A unique musical identity’; Blues Blast Magazine described his songs as being 'of bleak beauty' and Americana U.K. placed him at the forefront of the so-called ‘new Blues’ movement.
Hemming set about relentlessly honing his craft with follow-up album ‘City of Streets,’ and subsequently touring around Europe not once but twice, before immersing himself in the process of songwriting once more. The albums that followed, ‘Marked Man’ and ‘Darkness Before Dawn’ were breakthrough moments in his career, as reflected by the music press: “One of the best things I’ve heard this year." - Music News, “[a]…visceral and gut-wrenching musical experience.” – Blues Matters. “...bleak, brooding, huge...” - RnR Magazine. “A thunderous record…’’ - Maverick Magazine.
It was this success that has set him on the path to record his new album ‘The Meaning Of All Things’. Although coming from a more Alt Rock direction than it’s predecessors it still follows Hemming’s dark and cathartic songwriting, developing a maturity that still holds true to his Blues roots. The result is a collection of songs that have developed to a new level of musical maturity from previous albums. A land mark recording full of the lyrical poetry and imagery that stands Ben Hemming apart from others, while still retaining the rawness of emotion of past releases.
Recorded at Masterlink Productions, a studio located in rural Woking just outside of London, with producer James Welsh at the controls, the recording process acted as a ‘sale heaven’ away from the distractions of city life, and gave a real focus and direction to the album. “I feel I’ve surrounded myself with people who understand what I’m trying to achieve in my music. It’s a safe environment that has really helped develop my songwriting to the next level. I guess I found the self-belief I’ve been looking for.’’
Ben Hemming, at the forefront of the U.K. Rock scene, is continuing to bask in the limelight with his new album ‘The Meaning Of All Things’ released 5th September 2025.
